The Collaboration
The collaboration began with our desire to get to know Nordpeis better, so we reached out to Stian Varre for a chat. We had a great conversation about Nordpeis's products, design, and their approach to work.
In May 2021, we received a request from Stian with this assignment, which we were very pleased about.
We were impressed by Nordpeis's brand and products and wanted to do our utmost to create a quality product for Nordpeis's impressive portfolio.
The Design
Nordpeis has worked diligently on design in recent years, and we were greatly inspired by reviewing their latest releases and understanding all the decisions behind the newest models. There were clear design guidelines and brand strategy for us to work from. We aimed to enhance the Scandinavian modern expression, keeping the design minimalistic while adding some warmth and refined details for the quality-conscious. Today's interior-savvy customers expect high quality from a fireplace design that will stand for many years in their home. We interviewed salespeople and customers to draw inspiration from what most people dream a fireplace stove should look like and function optimally in everyday life.
We wanted to create a design that could stand out in the market by being a sleek stove with a small footprint and a large flame image. YoU is a stove that should be able to fit into any room, whether it's a small apartment or a large living room.
We aimed to design a stove that was minimalist in expression but with refined details that elevate the simple expression from basic to premium. Soft curves, clean lines, good proportions, and with some aesthetic features like the ribbed back wall that elevates the minimalist expression.
The design of the fire chamber was essential to shape in a way that allows the flames to come forward prominently. We have removed all distracting visual elements by shaping the fire chamber like a steel tray separated from the ribbed pattern of the back wall in thermotte. The top surface is molded for a soft form expression also on the top.
Functionality
Function and aesthetics go hand in hand for us when developing a product, whether small or large. Understanding the functional aspect for both optimal firing construction and the customer's needs in daily use is important to design a good product.
The aesthetic expression should not come at the expense of usability, or vice versa. We strive to create products of high quality in a timeless design that the owner can truly cherish and take good care of. This way, products like YoU can last a lifetime.
We think this is a way to think about sustainability: creating good products designed in a way that allows for maintenance or repair and thus withstand daily use for many years.
User-friendliness
We have worked on user-friendliness in several aspects. For example, we have developed YoU in many variants so that you can fit it into your home according to your chimney and placement requirements. High, low, hanging from the ceiling, on the wall, or standing freely in the room or close to the wall. You can find space to store firewood in the stove if you like, or you can choose to hide it in a chamber under the stove in another variant. The fire chamber itself is adapted to the standard length of firewood and designed for easy cleaning. The ash drawer is designed so that you don't have to empty the ash too often, and when it's time to empty it, it's easy to transport without too much mess. The handles are designed to provide a safe and comfortable grip. The ventilation control has been simplified and made clearer than before.
Collaborating with the skilled engineering team at Nordpeis has made the process so good and constructive. Together, we have worked towards creating good solutions.
We wanted to create a timeless design in YoU and not follow a trend. A design that withstands the test of time and can bring warmth and good aesthetics for the entire lifespan of the stove in the home it is invited into.
